WOOL AND FIBER PRODUCTS

Jacob wool is popular with handspinners and other fiber artists, and we select breeding stock with the best combination of quality wool
along with other important Jacob Sheep characteristics.
This includes appreciation for a range of fleece types, including both finer fleeces and those with more primitive character, all with Jacob softness and loftiness.
If interested in fleeces or other wool products, check with us for current availability and prices, and let us know your preferences regarding types of fleeces.

Unwashed Fleeces

We prefer to sell unwashed fleeces to leave processing decisions to the buyer, as it is more difficult to sort washed fleece by color.
But please request your favorites – lamb or adult? Darker or lighter colors? Preferred texture?

Medium to fine Jacob fleece

More primitive Jacob fleeces – coarser texture with soft handle

Preparation: All fleeces are lightly skirted on shearing day to remove belly wool, coarse britch, and any wet or contaminated wool.
Final skirting is completed when there is more time to find and remove tender or weathered back wool, as much hay contamination as possible, and all burrs and other undesirable locks.
Most of our fleeces are sold at Michigan Fiber Festival, but I will ship skirted fleeces for the cost of postage. Check with us for available fleeces and prices.

Jacob Roving

Some of our wool is processed into pin-drafted roving by Round Barn Fiber Mill in Durand, Illinois. Sold in 4-ounce bumps or balls. Colors include shades of gray from blended black and white fleeces, and mixed but not blended black and white stripes/streaks. Some all lambswool roving may be available.
Check with us for available colors and pricing.

100% Jacob Yarn

Our yarn is also spun by Round Barn Fiber Mill, where Jim and Margie Shafer are helpful in recommending yarn weight for the fleeces that we send them. Weights typically range from bulky to DK to fingering. All yarn is undyed natural colors.
In addition to black, white, and various shades of blended gray, we have some“barber pole” patterns of plied black and white. Check with us for available color and weights.

We have a limited amount of core-spun yarn, for rug making and similar uses. This is prepared from Jacob roving wrapped around a cotton core.

Tanned Sheepskins

When available, we have lambskins tanned to cushion your chairs or other uses.
We have one on our piano bench…. Check for availability and prices.
